Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized this school wasn't right for her. Ford later applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but, by that time she was already making her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
