Audra McDonald's talents are unrivaled in its breadth and diversity as a singer, and performer. A record-breaking winner of 6 Tony Awards two Grammy Awards and the Emmy Award in 2015 she was named as one of the top 100 influential people and received the National Medal for Arts --America's highest award for accomplishment in the field--from President Barack Obama. She has a home on screen, in television and Broadway. Her stunning soprano makes her a natural on the stage. Alongside her theatrical work she continues to make a name for herself in the field of recording and concert artist who performs regularly at world's foremost venues. McDonald lived in Fresno California, where she was raised by a family of musicians. In the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as an opera singer. After graduating, she was awarded her debut Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Performer in the Musical Carousel at Lincoln Center Theater (1994). Over the course of the following four years She was honored with two additional Tony Awards as a featured actress as a lead actress in Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998) which gave her the total 3 Tony Awards at the age of only 30. In 2004 she was in the running for her fourth Tony Award. Her role was that of A Raisin in the Sun together with Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her five year old daughter took home her first Tony for her performance in the category of Leading Actress when she played the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The year 2014 saw her make Broadway history and became the Tony Awards most decorated performer after she received six awards for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role that was also used as the vehicle for her Olivier Award-nominated 2017 debut performance in London's West End. As well as setting records in terms of the number of awards an actor has earned, she was the first ever to be awarded in the four categories. McDonald's theater credits also includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2005) 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nacht (2009), which was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park premier show, which is Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical sensation that debuted in 1921 and all That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) as well as Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald was first introduced to the television audience as a dramatic actress in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say A look at the Delany Sisters first 100 years. After her role as a co-star with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC version of Annie during 1999 she was been a regular character on the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. After receiving her debut Emmy nomination for her role in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 on the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and which starred Josh Brolin. She joined in the ensemble of the The Bedford Diaries on the WB. The Bedford Diaries and over the course of the season, she was been a frequent guest on the NBC TV show Kidnapped. In the year 2016 McDonald was nominated to win a fourth Emmy Award due to her performance on HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, a special film. She starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed comedy co-produced with Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in CBS's legal thriller The Good Wife, in 2009. In 2018, she returned to the role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular on the series. The performance earned her three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actor is currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes's historical comedy The Gilded Age on HBO.
